The Dinner Scene
Artist Statement
The Dinner Scene is a mixed media piece containing a plaster foot cast coated in layer of wax, a faux leather table cloth, a menu, ready made silverware, dried baby's breath, and small animal bones. This sculptural work continues my body of work revolving around the body, consumption, and sexual assault through cannibalism and body horror.
This piece is meant to show how the female body and feminine form is consumed in media and in interpersonal relationships. The choice of the foot symbolizes the taking all of someone and complete consumption. The menu references real (non- human) recipes with the descriptions replaced by short statements about being taken advantage of and the pressures to perform femininity.
The setting of the table also represents the romantic and ritual aspects of how women and feminine people are treated in American society. The way we as a society view romance creates aspects of rape culture and permissible harassment. The idea that women should be quiet and accepting of toxic behavior or advancements from men inspired aspects of this piece.
